Voltage drop
The loss of usable voltage that happens as electricity travels through a long or undersized cord or wire run.
Voltage drop is the difference between the voltage at the outlet and the voltage that actually reaches the tool at the end of a cord. Every wire has some resistance, and the longer and thinner that wire is, the more voltage is lost along the way. A little drop is normal, but too much and a motor never sees the power it was designed to run on.
Tools are especially sensitive to this. A motor starved of voltage compensates by pulling more current, which raises the operating temperature of both the motor windings and the cord itself. Over time this shortens the life of the tool and can trip breakers that seem oversized for the job on paper. It is one of the most common reasons a compressor or saw randomly stalls or underperforms in a garage compared to how it runs closer to a panel.
The fix is matching cord gauge and length to the tool, not just grabbing whatever cord is closest. As a rule, the farther the tool is from the outlet, the heavier the gauge needs to be to keep voltage drop low. If a tool runs noticeably hotter or weaker at the far end of a garage than it does near the door, voltage drop on the cord is worth checking before assuming the tool itself is failing.
