Overhead storage
Ceiling-mounted racks that use the empty space above a parked car or garage door track for bins and gear.
Overhead storage is a rack, usually a grid of steel bars or a platform, that hangs from the ceiling joists above where a car sits or above a garage door track. It turns unused headroom into storage for items that are bulky but not needed often, like holiday decorations, camping gear, or off-season sports equipment.
Because the rack hangs from the ceiling rather than sitting on the floor, installation is less forgiving than wall shelving. The mounting hardware has to reach actual ceiling joists, and the rack has to clear the garage door track and the roofline of a raised vehicle, which means measuring clearance carefully before buying a size.
Weight is spread across several mounting points, so a rack rated for a large total load can still fail if one bracket misses a joist. A common mistake is loading heavy bins onto one end of the rack instead of distributing weight evenly, which puts uneven stress on the mounting points. Keeping frequently used items off overhead storage also avoids climbing a ladder for things needed weekly.
