How to Store Summer Equipment in the Garage Over Winter

As autumn arrives, lawn mowers, pressure washers, bikes, coolers and patio furniture move into the garage for the winter. Putting them away properly protects engines and pumps from damage, keeps pests out and frees up space for winter car parking. A weekend of preparation also means everything starts and works when warm weather returns.
Prepare gas-powered equipment
Fuel left in small engines for months can break down, clogging carburettors. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations: many suggest adding fuel stabiliser and running the engine for a few minutes, while others advise running the tank dry before storage.
Clean grass and debris from mower decks, check or change oil, and remove or clean the air filter. Disconnect spark plug wires for safety during storage, and store fuel cans in an approved container away from heat sources.
Winterize pressure washers and hoses
Water left inside a pressure washer pump can freeze and crack it in an unheated garage. Drain all water, disconnect hoses and spray gun, and use a pump protector or antifreeze product recommended by the manufacturer.
Drain garden hoses completely, coil them loosely and hang them on wall hooks. Store spray nozzles and fittings together in a labelled bin so they are easy to find next season.
Store bikes and outdoor toys
Clean and dry bikes, lubricate chains and store them off the floor using wall mounts or ceiling hooks to free floor space. Slightly deflating tyres is unnecessary for most bikes, but check pressure before spring rides.
Deflate, clean and fully dry inflatables and pool gear before folding, since trapped moisture causes mildew. Store them in sealed plastic bins rather than cardboard boxes, which attract pests and absorb moisture.
Protect patio furniture and grills
Clean cushions and let them dry completely before bagging them. Stack or fold furniture and cover it to keep dust and droppings off. Overhead storage racks are ideal for bulky, lightweight items used only in summer.
Clean grills and remove food residue, which attracts rodents. Propane tanks should be stored outdoors in an upright position, not inside an enclosed garage, according to common safety guidance.
Organise for winter access
Put summer items in the least accessible spaces, such as high shelves and overhead racks, and move winter tools like snow shovels, ice melt and car care supplies near the door.
Label bins by season and keep a clear path to the car. Placing a battery tender near stored mowers with batteries and a dehumidifier in damp garages keeps equipment in better condition through winter.
