Pegboard

Pegboard is a sheet of hardboard or metal punched with a grid of evenly spaced holes. Hooks, small baskets, and holders slot into the holes and can be pulled out and moved whenever a layout needs to change, which makes it one of the simplest ways to get hand tools up off a bench and visible at a glance.

Hardboard pegboard is inexpensive and fine for lightweight items like screwdrivers, tape, and small hand tools, but the holes can wear out or crack under repeated use and heavier tools. Metal pegboard costs more but holds up to hammers, wrenches, and other heavier items without the holes deforming over time, and it tends to look cleaner over a long life.

For it to work well, pegboard needs backing, either mounted with a small air gap using standoffs so hooks seat fully, or fastened directly into studs for heavier loads. A common mistake is screwing pegboard flat against drywall with no gap, which stops the hooks from seating correctly and lets tools slip off. Matching hook size to tool weight also avoids bent or popped-out hooks.
