Pint capacity

Pint capacity is the number manufacturers use to rate how much water a dehumidifier can pull out of the air in a 24-hour period, typically measured under standardized lab conditions at a specific temperature and humidity level. It is the main spec used to compare one dehumidifier against another when shopping for a damp garage.

Real garages rarely match those lab conditions, since a garage is often colder, less sealed, and larger than the test environment, and a colder space slows how efficiently a dehumidifier can extract moisture. This means a unit's real-world performance in a chilly, drafty garage is often lower than its rated pint capacity would suggest, so sizing up rather than buying the smallest unit that matches square footage on paper tends to work better.

Persistent dampness or condensation on a garage floor or on cold surfaces is also often a sign of a bigger issue, such as poor ventilation or missing insulation, that a dehumidifier alone will not fully solve. Pairing a properly sized dehumidifier with basic air sealing and insulation gets closer to the rated performance than the dehumidifier working on its own against constant incoming humidity.
